Nefertiti travels

From April to June 2007, CulturCooperation e.V., in cooperation with numerous partners, is presenting the campaign, "Nefertiti travels". Acting within the framework of the Culture and Development project, the campaign aims to initiate a broad public debate on Egypt's controversial and disputed claim for the return or at minimum the loan of the bust.

The campaign's intentionally neutral title hopes to encourage an open discussion. At the moment, Nefertiti is only traveling within the limits of Berlin. However, given its special cultural importance, it is the perspective of the campaign's initiators that it should now be possible for the bust to be shown in Egypt for the very first time. While the Egyptians showed the willingness to compromise within their request for the loan, the German authorities have not responded yet.

Inform and find solutions

Many countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America have, like Egypt, demanded the return or loan of important cultural objects from European Museums. According to our current worldview, many of these objects left their countries of origin under questionable circumstances. Some governments or museums have consequently repatriated single objects or collections to these countries. Most European countries, however, categorically deny such claims.

No legal basis exists for these claims of restitution because all international conventions are relatively new and not retroactive. They do not affect claims regarding, for example, cultural objects pilfered during the colonial period. It is therefore a purely political decision to return any objects.

The campaign's intention is to inform the public, start a public debate with responsible decision makers, and discuss different possible solutions.

Nofretete geht auf Reisen

Im Rahmen des Projekts "Culture and Development" wird die CulturCooperation e.V. von April bis Juni 2007 eine bundesweite Kampagne mit dem Titel "Nofretete geht auf Reisen" durchführen. Mit dieser Kampagne möchten die Initiatoren eine breite öffentliche Debatte über die strittige Forderung Ägyptens nach einer Rückgabe bzw. Ausleihe der Büste ermöglichen.

Der Titel der Kampagne hält den Ausgang bewusst offen. Momentan reist Nofretete nur innerhalb Berlins. Aus Sicht der Initiatoren sollte es aber heute möglich sein, dass die Büste der Nofretete erstmals aufgrund ihrer hervorragenden Bedeutung auch in Ägypten gezeigt wird. Während die ägyptische Seite mit der Anfrage nach einer Ausleihe durchaus Kompromissbereitschaft signalisiert, liegt von den zuständigen deutschen Stellen jedoch bisher kein Angebot vor.

Informieren und Lösungen finden

Viele Länder Afrikas, Asiens und Lateinamerikas verlangen wie Ägypten von europäischen Museen die Rückgabe bzw. Ausleihe bedeutender Kulturgüter, die unter -nach heutiger Sicht- fragwürdigen Bedingungen nach Europa gelangten. Einige Regierungen oder Museen haben daraufhin einzelne Stücke oder Sammlungen an die Herkunftsländer zurückgegeben. Die meisten europäischen Länder haben solche Forderungen aber bisher strikt abgelehnt.

Da für Rückgabeforderungen keinerlei juristische Grundlage existiert, weil alle internationalen Konventionen z.B. die in der Kolonialzeit entwendeten Kulturgüter nicht betreffen, ist es ausschließlich eine politische Entscheidung, wenn einzelne Exponate zurückgegeben werden.

Die Kampagne soll über dieses Thema informieren, eine breite öffentliche Debatte auch mit den zuständigen Entscheidungsträgern ermöglichen und Lösungsmodelle diskutieren.

Sie wird von der CulturCooperation e.V. in Zusammenarbeit mit zahlreichen Partnern von April bis Juni 2007 durchgeführt.
