Conference: European Network - Culture and Development (Vienna, January 2007)

The networking-conference in Vienna was a great success: Lectures on central questions of the broad field of culture and development, intensive discussions and professional exchange lead to the formulation of two letters on the meaning of culture in development cooperation, which were signed by the 40 NGO participants and sent to the European Commission in Brussels.

Networking on Culture and Development

"The issue is not whether culture matters... That it must be, given the pervasive influence of culture on human life. The real issue, rather, is how - not whether - culture matters. What are the different ways in which culture may influence development? How can the influences be better understood, and how might they modify or alter the development policies that seem appropriate?"

Networking based on the issue culture and development has following goals:

• to bring together different actors, mainly NGOs, artists, cultural organisation and research institutions; their different backgrounds and approaches towards cultural issues will lead to an inspiring debate among the network

• to exchange the different experiences and status quo concerning culture and development in European, especially in Eastern and Central Europe and Scandinavian countries.

• to built up links between different partners as networks of interests which could be the base for formulating project proposals and implementing common activities and programs.

• to create awareness in the development community (NGO and decision makers) about the role of culture and the impact of culture projects on sustainable development and to mobilise civil society support for the claims of the developing countries for the protection of their cultural heritage as well as the restitution of cultural goods lost in colonial times.

Following activities are planned:

Consultations meetings in different cities of Eastern and Central European countries

E-mail news letter: with information about the topics of the programme and the planned cultural events, publications, expert meetings and the mass-campaign. The newsletter will be edited three times a year.

Die Netzwerk-Konferenz "Kultur und Entwicklung" in Wien war ein voller Erfolg: Referate zu zentralen Aspekten des breiten Themenfeldes, intensive Diskussionen und fachlicher Austausch haben zur Entwicklung zweier Papiere zur Bedeutung von Kultur in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit geführt, die von den 40 beteiligten NGOs unterzeichnet an die EU-Kommission in Brüssel geschickt werden.

Netzwerk für Kultur und Entwicklung

Die Vernetzung zum Thema Kultur und Entwicklung hat die folgenden Ziele:

Verschiedene Akteure, vor allem NGO, Künstler, Organisationen aus dem Kulturbereich und Forschungseinrichtungen, sollen zusammengebracht werden. Ihre spezifischen unterschiedlichen Kompetenzen und Zugänge zu kulturellen Themen können eine konstruktive Debatte innerhalb des Netzwerks anregen.

• Erfahrungsaustausch zur Arbeit im Bereich von Kultur und Entwicklung in Europa, besonders in den östlichen und zentraleuropäischen Ländern sowie in Skandinavien.

• Neue Kontakte zwischen unterschiedlichen Akteuren ermöglichen gemeinsame Projekte und Kooperationen innerhalb des Interessenbündnisses.

• Bewusstseinsarbeit unter Mitarbeitern der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit zur Bedeutung des Faktors Kultur und von kulturellen Projekten für nachhaltige Entwicklung; Mobilisierung und Sensibilisierung der Zivilgesellschaft für die Belange und Ziele der Länder des Südens betreffend des Schutzes ihres kulturellen Erbes und die Rückgabe von Kulturgütern, die in der Kolonialzeit verloren gingen.

Vernetzungstreffen in verschiedenen Städten in Ost- und Zentraleuropa

Email-Newsletter mit Informationen über die Themen des Programms, geplante Veranstaltungen, Publikationen, Symposien und die Kampagne. Der Newsletter erscheint dreimal jährlich.
